Alabama: Young Authors Conference
I did not see OR feed any gators in Mobile. But these kids were voracious about reading their own work compiled in the 2013 Young Authors Anthology sponsored by the Metro Mobile Reading Council. These kids were attentive and sincere about wanting to become better writers. The made galimotos and wrote poems about them. These middle grade and high school students were selected based on their writing abilities to attend the afternoon conference. Your main character is not just defined by physical attributes. What does he or she need or want? Your main character drives [...]

Technology and Adapting: Galimoto

He suggested that I left out a major connections between the book, the children who build these amazing toys out of wire and how it all applies to technology and adaptation.I guess when I first wrote the book, I was not technologically savvy. I am still a bit of a troglodyte. But I can see that connecting my [...]
The Perfect Ten In Truchas NM
I needed a way to kick start my poetry, writing from the Navajo reservation in the southwest. The landscapes can be beautiful and yet I have had trouble relating. When a bum knee(and another story) made it look like a planned trip to Telluride for skiing was not going to work well for me, I jumped on board for the Perfect Ten Poetry Conference offered by Tupelo Press with editor Jeffrey Levine.Slight problem. We needed 20 poems. I signed up late and had to write at least 10-15 poems in 5 days. [...]
Destination: Canyon de Chelly Window
The window is a famous rock formation in Canyon de Chelly. We had an option to take a 7 mile hike on Sunday to find the window. It rained all day Saturday. Our guide texted me, "I'm still planning to hike tomorrow. Rain, snow or shine. =).On Sunday it was "iffy". Cloudy, dark clouds, no rain. Our guide texted, " Might be lil muddy in some areas and possibility of some sprinkles but I think it will be good for a hike to the Window." Steve and I decided to go for it, [...]
