Poetry Reading:Life Without Furniture
Standing room only for Sharon McDermott reading from her recent book of poetry, Life Without Furniture at the Williams home. A lovely way to usher in Spring. How lucky we are to have Sharon a talented poet and musician as a friend and as part of the Pittsburgh writing and teaching scene. Poetry and friends has been a tradition in our home for many years. We hope we can feature more writers, poets and artists in our home in the future. Or just come and read a favorite poem or one you have [...]
Snow! They Say.
I am working on a picture book, working title, Snow! They Say. And wow was there a lot of snow in Vermont last weekend! A writer is always doing the work of writing even when she is at play. But it is also about anticipation, expectations, disappointment, predictions, imagination and even decisions. Throw in a little meteorology. All that in 400 words. I'm back in [...]

Lunar New Year: “Stealing” from the Grandchildren
Recently home from Taiwan and a visit with my grandsons has got me thinking like a writer of books for children. What if? What if your biracial Taiwanese cousin comes to stay for a year? What if he is going to go to school with you? What if you are in 5th grade and you are already having trouble navigating school, social life... what if your sister and best friend and confidant is away on an exchange program and your other best friend is no help at all? Where is this kid going [...]
I Don’t Like My Name Because Cooper *rimes* with Pooper(I Love Fan Mail)
A batch of fan mail helps brighten the New Year. It always warms the heart to read something like: I loved your book My Name is Sangoel. However at least ninety percent of the letters begin or end this way. So I remain a little skeptical. Some get deeper into the literary criticism : I love your book because it *have* so many good details. You have a very good book! Is there going to be a second book? (Sequels and series books are hugely popular...why can't I write some?) I love your [...]
